There is a human H5N1 virus circulating and causing seasonal influenza and in the past, very occasionally, H1N1 viruses from swine have infected humans. The specific type of the H1N1 virus causing illness now is new or “novel” and in the current outbreak it is clear that this virus is able to infect humans and be passed from person to person. Although part of the virus may have originated from pigs, there is no evidence that the current spread of infection is coming from that source.

How does the influenza A (H1N1) virus spread?
Spread of this new virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What should I do to keep from getting infected by the influenza A (H1N1) virus?
First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

What is a ‘pandemic’?
Influenza pandemics happen when a new human flu virus emerges and spreads rapidly across the globe because humans have no previous immunity against this virus.

Are we at risk of a pandemic?
No one can say whether or not the current situation would evolve into a severe pandemic. But whether it turns out to be a
3 Preventing and diagnosing influenza
catastrophic health event or little more than a bad flu season, it is important to be prepared for the worst.

What can you do?
Prepare yourself and your family immediately for a possible pandemic. This includes gathering and storing emergency supplies and adopting habits that will reduce the chance of you or your family getting infected and spreading it to others (for example, washing hands regularly, covering nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, and not spitting in public).

What is the UN doing?
UN organizations are working to educate and inform staff about the threat of a pandemic and how best to prepare for it. Departments and offices have prepared business continuity plans and decided which functions are to be considered “critical” during a pandemic. Non-critical functions may be suspended for a period. In the event of a severe pandemic, most staff will be requested to remain at home and follow the UN’s Medical Guidelines. Please also see the UN pandemic influenza website: www.un.org/staff/pandemic.

ARE YOU AT RISK ?

Seasonal influenza
Everyone is at risk of getting seasonal influenza. It passes easily from person to person through droplets expelled from the nose and mouth of an infected person. These droplets can pass directly into the nose, mouth or eyes of a person who is nearby
5 Preventing and diagnosing influenza (less than 1 meter, or 3 feet, away) or indirectly when a person touches surfaces that droplets have fallen onto and then touches his or her nose, mouth or eyes before washing hands. Crowded, indoor environments may promote the chances of such transmission, which may explain the increase in respiratory infections during the winter months.
Seasonal influenza can lead to complications and even death. Most complications occur in people aged 65 years and over or in people with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or lung disease and diabetes. Pregnant women, infants and very young children are also at increased risk of complications from influenza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year 3 million to 5 million people have severe cases of seasonal influenza worldwide, and 250,000 to 500,000 people die.

Pandemic Influenza
When a pandemic occurs, everyone will be at risk, not just frail or elderly people. Pandemic influenza passes from person to person just as easily and quickly as seasonal flu. But, unlike with seasonal flu, people will not be immune to this new virus, so more people will become infected. In addition, it is possible that even young and healthy people who do not normally suffer complications from seasonal flu may develop serious complications and even die in a pandemic.
It is important to know, however, that the majority of people who will develop a flu-like illness in a pandemic will recover and develop immunity to the new human virus.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT HUMAN INFL UENZA VIRUSES ?

Things you should know about human influenza viruses:
• They spread through infected droplets from breathing passages.
• Droplets are expelled by talking, spitting, coughing, sneezing.
• The droplets spread about 1 meter (3 feet) from the infected person, either directly to other people or indirectly through hands and other surfaces.
• The viruses can live for several hours on hard surfaces, or on cloth and paper.
• If healthy people touch infected hands, doorknobs, keyboards, telephones, etc., they can infect themselves by touching mouths, noses or eyes.
• Sometimes the viruses can spread through the air.
• An infected person is most likely to spread the virus when he or she has fever and a cough.
• It is possible that an infected person will spread the virus a day before showing signs of illness. 3

A Teacher's Creed

I believe I have been called by God to teach.

I believe in children...young and old...black and white...rich and poor....each in need of learning.
I believe in blackboards, chalk dust, textbooks, and computers for each has a part in imparting knowledge.
I believe the love I give to my students will someday be reflected in their lives.
I believe the gift of teaching is not measured simply by marks, enrollment, or the end of the school year.
It is in the witness I give and the fullness of the life lived by those I teach.
I believe I have the power to lead those in need of learning to the threshold of their own minds.
I believe in my giftedness to use each of the tools available no matter how new or old..for the light of knowledge in the eyes of another is my goal.
I believe teaching is more than tests, diplomas, paperwork, and fundraising.
It is the values I breathe daily into another...slowly.
It is in the faith I share in Jesus...ever changing and growing...never ending.
I believe my success today goes unnoticed...until those I teach and touch can stand alone and say "in my life I have learned..."
I believe if I have taught and touched one person...in God's name...I have used my gift to me justly..and can humbly say...
I believe in teaching....
I AM A TEACHER!!
~by Julie McClellan

Is it possible for us to live both worlds?

<meta equiv="CONTENT-TYPE" content="text/html; I want peace! We all want Peace! But there is no real peace. There has always been conflict. What action can we take in the name of peace? Can rich Filipinos share their wealth and make a special effort to help the poor catch up their developments? Can both sides change the politics of anger and resentment into a policy of cooperation?

Peace and goodwill! Brotherhood and unity! These are expressions of hope and faith, of mutual love and trust that should erase discrimination, prejudice and misunderstanding which set brothers countrymen and nation against each other; yet, these are expressions of a dream that continues to elude mankind. Will world peace remain just a thought, hidden and left forgotten?

Peace is much harder to define. It is something that we can only sense and scratch for. True peace is more difficult and unusual than any other achievements even for two people who live together and need each other.

For thousand of years we gave known the mighty maxim, “Thou shall not kill”. Yet we have created a science and technology which manufactures explosive and poison gases which kills millions of lives.

Many believe that the World War II set in motion is such gigantic mechanism of horror, that we, the new generations be frightened of ever war again. But that option is absolutely mistaken. It did not fear men. At present they enjoyed killing no memory of war deterred them.

What I am saying is self-evident. Every soldier and rebel shot to death is an eternal repetition of an error, so the truth must be repeated forever and even in a thousand of years.

We shouted for a change, a change and democracy to survive the tensions and stock of man’s headlong flight to peace to transform lifestyle and outlook so that eternal poverty and deprivation will be turn into a full measure of dignity.

We live in a time of revolution. Freedom promotes revolution for it is the very soul who is privileged to act upon dissatisfaction, for this is I am convinced that democracy and revolution is identical, meaning democracy is revolution. And I believe that revolution is a test of man’s claim to humanity.

It has been said that revolution may survive a political or economic error but not a moral one. The question then is, what moral we must be guard against in reshaping our society? There are errors which are particular against to ones situation or function; and there are errors which are common to all.

Of this common to all and the most conspicuous one is the error of self-satisfaction. Some of us whether military, rebels, or civilians are striving for privilege in the mistaken belief that fighting is a passport to achieve it.

Today, our society loss the human values. Bloodshedding add to this dehumanizing loss. By this task of every Filipino us to regain the human values by internalizing the supreme maxim; Thou shall not kill by implementing the true meaning of democracy.

The love of peace must come from a knowledge which may be seen and formulated in a thousand different ways. But it must always embody one truth. The godliness that each one bear within. It is supreme knowledge that will open our hearts which miracles begin. By then peace will arise, enemy becomes a brother; Death becomes birth, disgrace becomes honor and calamity to a good fortune.

In the Philippines today, there are millions of youths like me, eager and dynamic to find their place in the society. The time is near when upon our shoulders will be thrown the mantle of leadership. Give us wise counsel and guidance to make us ideal Filipinos, loyal, peace minded, intelligent and courageous.

Chosen future: God’s intent

Have you ever wondered of what’s your goal in life? Money
As in the number one reason... why??? Obviously, research projects requires a great need of money... (hahaha... can make me poor for sure...joke)
2. Topic
Why??? Simply, because there could be lot of topic to be consider in making research but there are only chosen topic that can gain interest...
3. Time
Time is very essential in making a research... But then, as we all know... in college, life is as busy as hell... And finding time to make research is very difficult, especially, if you have lot of subjects to attend and think to... waah... (can make you crazy as hell...)

But no matter how hard or difficult making research is, it is not a reason to give up... so cheers... you can do it...

<span style="font-family: lucida grande; My First choice of area is Elenita Heights Subdivision, Mintal, Davao City, but I'm still looking for other possible place in case the management of the subdivision will not give me permission to conduct study in the said area. in regards would these, i like to show you the following factors i have considered under my study (if being approved by our CS Research Adviser):

1. the catchment area - the source of the water supply.
2. the volume of rainfall - the second factor that affects the amount of water supply.
3. the volume of consumption - the third factor that affects the amount of water supply.

Under this study. i would like to present to you my objectives why i chose this topic.

1. To gather data on what will be the effect if the catchment area would decrease due to some instances (like adding some areas for houses, buildings and etc.).
2. To gather data on the effect of rainfall in the amount of water supply (if there would be less rainfall due to temperature change because of global warming).
3. To gather data on the effect of consumption in the water supply if ever there would be an increase in the area's population.

Derived Research Topics from the President's SONA

The Invinsible Hand of Population Control

The uncontrolled number of population is the number one of the source of poverty in the Philippines. So as a citizen of the country, the population control is I think the first thing to consider or to be implemented in our society. As a researcher if given a chance to have a research about this, my objectives are the following:

to limit the number of children per family into two.

to guarantee enough supply of food for every family.

to eliminate high rate of hunger in the country.

to eliminate theft caused by having no food on the table.

to give children proper nutrition from enough food the family provides.

Corruptions in Government Projects

Most of the government projects in our country are coupled with scandals and issues of corruption. This is because most of the projects are done with poor planning and inadequate information. The project details are also not shared to the concerned people thus aspiring suspicions and doubts. Proper planning through simulation can grant answers to these problems as well as in controlling costs so no money are wasted thus shutting down the creation of doubts and suspicions. The objectives of this study are the following:

to determine the logical factors of proper planning

to determine the major concerns of government projects

to create a framework for proper planning of government projects

to determine the advantages and benefits of simulating of government projects before the start of the development

to encourage the local government to use simulation or other IT solutions

Value Added Tax

At this economic and global crisis that continues to stricken the country and the Filipino, Value Added Tax has been a great way to survive and lessen its effect especially to less fortunate. The objectives of this research are the following:

to lessen our debt from the World Bank and shore up our fiscal reforms and independence,

to provide all the basic needs of all the victims of any calamity such as typhoon, earthquake, etc.

to funded enough savings for infrastructure program for poorest provinces,

to provide subsidy for farmers as a primary source of rice production,

to help primarily the under privileged to ride out the world food and energy crisis.

A Review on our CS Research Method Chosen Classmates Article

I chose the article/post by Ms. Sheena Joy Lanada in this assignment. The topic is "Breaking Phone Encryption". The article she had posted in her blog and this forum is quite interesting, relevant and beneficial.

As what i read in the article of Ms. Lanada, conversation in phone and voice messaging in the internet is made possible by the help of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). With this current technology in communication there is number one problem that arise and it is the "Security". Information can either leak or being shown to others by means of eavesdropping by means of different strategies like wire tapping.

To address this problem, there are a lot of ways that are being suggested like:

variable bit-rate encoding presented by John Hopkins University Researchers

using special hardware called cryptophone

The suggested ways are indeed very helpful in protecting one's privacy. But obviously, it is difficult to publish ones to such prestigious journals, especially for those amateurs in the field of research. And that is why knowing, the different key points and factors on how to publish one’s work are very important. I think the most important key points are doing a careful and accurate job in the process of preparing the research, conducting the research and writing the paper. And these are the other factors to consider:

1.Journal quality. We have to consider first the quality of a journal. Obviously, only best quality journal are the ones that can only be publish in top tier journals.

2.Type of Research.

3.Packaging.

4.Writing.

5.Footnotes.

Evaluating a Research

For amateurs in the field of researching, it is important to know how to evaluate their own research paper in order to have a good piece of research work/project. In regards with this, there are some set of rules and guidelines to follow and these varies in many ways. To evaluate a research paper, I think these are the guidelines we need to follow:

1. Clarity of Presentation
Includes clarity, sequencing and coherence of arguments

2. Quality of Paper Organization
Includes use of subtitles, illustrations, graphs and charts

3. Quality of Research and Accuracy
Includes:
-Completeness of search for references, and Acceptable number of references
-Includes Appropriateness and Soundness of Methodology
-References are of acceptable quality (e.g., peer review)
-Bibliography lists the cited references in the correct sequence

4. Significance and Originality of Ideas
Includes topic, references chosen and personal opinions (applied to graduate papers)

5. Quality of Concepts and Contribution to Field
Includes evaluation of analysis, its originality and relation to business issues (applied to graduate papers)

6. Others
Format – which includes the following:

-Title Page Style
-Table of Contents
-Table of Illustrations, Graphs and Charts
-Running Headers
-Length of Paper
-Appendices
-Spelling / Grammar

I’m not saying that these are the proper or the right guidelines because it still differs on the required guidelines of the institution, firm, etc. the research paper are going to be presented.

Role of Research Topic in My Future Career

There are few people that disagrees that research paper who do not already agree that research is an important aspect of the undergraduate experience. Furthermore, most will agree that there is no substitute for experience, and the best way to demonstrate to students the excitement of discovery is to have them experience it first hand, so why should research? For students like me, when i say knowledge it just means new knowledge but then it is not that acceptable. There are still knowledge or learnings that needs further understanding that makes needs for research experiences.

In finding research problems, the number one thing that we should consider is our interests. If do we really like that research topic? Or do we really like to engage to it?

The question is does the choice of research topic does affect the future career of a person? For me, it really depends on the person. Our future is not something we can predict. It is something that is related with our past works. As a human being, it is natural that our interest changes fro time to time so it doesn't mean that our choice of research topic in the past can still be our interest in the future. Because when I graduate it doesn't mean that my future job is still related with my undergraduate course, so, it means that my research project in the past which is related with my course is really needed or does affect my future career.

On the other hand, research topic can still be related with my future or does affect my future career. In the sense that my job is related to it, my sense of interests still the same with my research project, and if that research topic plays a great role in my life or I can say that it is the center of my intellectual needs.

Research Topics for IT/CS

One of the critical steps in technical research / thesis writing is the choice of problem or research topics. A great number of students like me find this stage difficult. Most of the time this factor hinders us to pursue in making research paper. So as an IT student of University of Southeastern Philippines, to solve this problem, I think the research topics should usually be address are the following:

1. Topics which are related to IT courses (such as programming, simulation modelling, database system, and etc.).
2. Topics that is my great interests.
3. Topics that is useful for concerned people in IT.

For me, the following topics I stated above is very helpful for me and other IT students on what topics for their research they are going to choose.

State of Computer Science Research and its Technical Topics

Resources:
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/university/scholars/ur/collaboration/index.html
http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/

In these days, computer science research has a difficulty in producing itself because of lack of support, especially for those growing countries. Since these kind of research require a large amount of money, time, and effort. There are also some cases that there not so many people has interests in these field of research. And also some cases that obsolete topics is just repeating.

In the articles I read the in the above mentioned sites, the current unstable state of CS research can be solved by means of collaborative research initiatives. IBM CS research is remarkably good. They have strong goals for CS Research to be above level. So far they are inventing new algorithms and architectures for finding, integrating, managing, analyzing and protecting information, and explore and prototype new modes of user interaction. They are creating the technical underpinnings for a national health care network and do fundamental research into game theory and mechanism design, lattices and the theory of semantic mappings. They are also conducting some contests for the best research projects through “Almaden CS Director's Prize”. Nowadays, IBM's Computer Science research and articles are more about the following topics:

information-based computing,

user productivity,

healthcare IT;

and the theoretical foundations of computer science.

Computer Science Research doesn't limit itself to those following topics stated above. There are also some technical topics about Algorithms & Theory, Artificial Intelligence, Communications & Networking, Computational Biology & Medical Informatics, Computer Architecture, Data Management, Distributed & Fault-Tolerant Computing, Graphics & Visualization, Human Computer Interaction, Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining, Mobile Computing, Multimedia and etc.

Assignment 1 in CS Research Methods

1. She is a frequent speaker at such diverse conferences, which had been sponsored by NSA/NIST/NCSC and DEFCON. Recently appointed to the Wildlist Board of Directors, she is actively involved in the development of anti-virus software test criteria and methods.
This paper is published in Computers and Security Magazine, and published by Elsevier Press’ Computers and Security 1995. The researcher uses a Descriptive Method of Research to present the said paper. The paper describes the nature of computer viruses and other malicious software and explores the causes of these particular phenomena.
This paper discusses the viruses for sale and compared the distribution of computer viruses and the distribution methods of ‘hacking tools’. It also include some issues such as the characteristics of individuals involved in the distribution of these types of programs, and problems of legal redress, as well as possible solutions based on ethics and ethical theory. It also discusses the factors usually neglected in studies concerning computer virus infections.
The paper clearly discusses the nature of viruses and it is so good for the readers to further understand the real characteristic of viruses, which is really a nuisance nowadays. As we all know, viruses are nothing but a pain for it has lots of bad effects in our computer units and to the extent that this technologically enabled crime is not yet punishable by law and one of the only things to stop is to have proper ethics, which is not very helpful to stop this kind of crime.
For me, even though this paper has been made a long time ago, it is still very helpful to fully understand things about viruses and for further studies about the topic.

2. White IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
This paper is presented at Virus Bulletin Conference, Munich, Germany in October 1998. The researcher is a descriptive research using trend analysis method to present the said paper.
The goal of this paper is to encourage clever people to work on these problems. The researcher examines several open research problems in the area of protection from computer viruses. For each problem, the researchers review the work that has been done to date, and suggest possible approaches.
As time is fast evolving, computer viruses and worms are getting hard to be controlled. Nowadays, there are a lot of spreading viruses and worms that are harder to detect and disinfect. And because of these there are a lot of people are troubled on how to address and resolve this problem. The researcher was right in saying that there were a lot of problems about in computer viruses and worms research for there are still a lot of factors and problems which are not yet addressed. And as time is fast evolving, computer viruses are also evolving, but still earlier problems about this crime are not yet been resolved, instead it is getting worst.
The paper is really is interesting and nice to read because of the new ideas and knowledge being showned or presented.

3. Anatomy of a Commercial-Grade Immune System

Reference: www.research.ibm.com/antivirus/SciPapers/White/Anatomy/Anatomy.PDF

This scientific paper is made by Steve R. White, Morton Swimmer, Edward J. Pring, William C. Arnold, David M. Chess, and John F. Morar of IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
The researchers use a Descriptive Method of Research to present the said paper.
The paper had been structured as follows. First, the researchers review some historical incidents of very rapidly spreading viruses, and viruses that caused widespread concern. Then, the researchers use these examples to understand what a system must do to solve the problem of epidemics of fast-spreading viruses. The paper also discusses the three types of loads, the average loads, peak loads and overloads that will be placed on such a system and the requirements that such a system must satisfy. Then it describes in detail the implementation of an immune system, focusing on the novel elements of the active network and virus analysis center, which work together to keep the system in constant operation and capable of handling very large virus epidemics.
Yes, it is true that there is lots of existing research studies about computer viruses and worms, nowadays. But then, it is so rare that you can see or read research studies about answers on how to address this kind of problem. As we all know, as time evolves, problems also evolves and creating an immune system for viruses is hard to make. And I think finding answer to this problem is like fishing in a swimming pool. Because even if there are a lot of people who always make ways to answer the problem, there is still some people who will still make this technologically enables crime. The thing is even if there is a commercial-grade immune system for computer viruses and worms, if there are still a lot of evil and irresponsible person and virus makers existing, there would still be no difference. It is like erasing a past without counting or making factor the reason of the problem. But still, we still have to thank the people, who make immune system for viruses. Its because of their hard work, that IT still survives.
The paper really helps me a lot in understanding the anatomy and physiology of past viruses for me to able to understand the present ones.
